Posters of Paris

Can you believe its the last day of 2012?  Kind of shocking to me.  This year went by super fast it seems.

This past Saturday my mom and I went to see Posters of Paris at the Dallas Museum of Art.  No photographs were allowed at the exhibit so I don't have any pictures of the posters, but I have pictures of the posters that my mom and I created at the art activity the museum was having.  So, here is my mom's poster:

And mine:

It was really fun to do these and I am so glad that we took the time to make them.  The exhibit was very good - I loved seeing all the different posters (over 100) and learning about the history of the poster art form.  I highly recommend this exhibit if you are in the area.

I got 2 postcards that are posters from the exhibit:

I also took some photos of pieces in the modern art area:
Franz Kline

Jackson Pollock

A Rug with a Rorschach image - had to get this b/c it combined art & psychology
I also took a picture of this Henry Moore sculpture:

And I made an art journal page about our trip:

You can see from this page that we went to get gourmet ice cream from the food truck Coolhaus after the museum.  Here we are in the 48 degree weather, standing outside, eating ice cream:

It was a great day.  I had a lot of fun.

One last thing - I have decided to start a new blog!  This blog began as a cooking blog, thus the name Ravenous Rae.  It has evolved over the years and is no longer just about cooking.  I think it is more appropriate to where I am now and where I am going in life to start a new blog.  The blog name is "Rachel Mims, Artist, Art Therapist in Training" and can be located at http://rachelmims.blogspot.com/  Please join me tomorrow, January 1st, 2013  at this new blog address.

I hope you enjoyed the recap!  Thanks for stopping by and I hope to "see" you tomorrow at my new blog!!

Samara

A few days ago, my mom and I went to the Arlington Museum of Art to see Samara.  The exhibit showcases a house (Samara) built by Frank Lloyd Wright.  It was very interesting.  You get to learn all about the owners that had the house built and the process that they went through, working with Wright, to get the house to completion.  You can see things like architectural drawings of the house:

And letters that were sent from Wrights firm to the couple.  You can also see furniture that was made for the house:

Serving Cart that can lift/lower and is the same size as the dining table so it can be used to extend the table for parties

Tables from the house

Furnishings from the house
You can also see how the house was made and things like this:

It holds a window pane.  And:

It is a garden lamp!

In addition to learning about Samara, you learn about Wright's Usonian houses.

I feel like I learned a lot at this exhibit!  If you are in the area, I suggest you check it out!!

Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful weekend!!

Christmas Isn't Over Yet

Well, really Christmas is over, but I wanted to share some Christmas photos with you!!
Mom and Dad on Christmas Eve:

Christmas morning we got up and were making breakfast.  My dad came home from the convenience store where we went to get coffee and had purchased a lottery ticket for each of us.  This is mine:
 I won $100!!  I was shocked!
I got a VERY beautiful necklace with matching earrings for Christmas, but I don't have a good photo of it yet, so I will try to get one soon.  I also got this travel jewelry bag and little purse:
It is handmade by the wife of someone that works at my mom's workplace.

Here are some present opening pictures:
mom being silly

Dad getting items out of his stocking

Mom and Dad opening the present I bought them...
This is what I got them... a TV for the bedroom
A friend of the family got us a large crystal drink dispenser to use at parties... we thought it looked like a very large glass:
And lastly, it is not Christmas without snow, right?

This picture was taken when it first started to snow.  Eventually the whole ground was covered and it stayed that way until about noon the next day.  Sadly I did not take any more pictures.  I know that's not a lot of snow for you guys up north, but for Texas it was!

I hope you guys enjoyed the Christmas pictures, and I hope you Christmas was lovely too!  Thanks for stopping by today and have a GREAT day.

AJ Page & Book-Inz

Hey guys!  So sorry for not blogging often.  I feel like that is all I do lately on here - apologize for not blogging consistently.  On the other hand I think "that's life" and I'm sure you guys realize that I am a real person with real commitments just like you, and that sometimes I just get lazy or I forget.  So... for the new year, I will try to blog more often, but I won't beat myself up if I am not able to do it consistently.  I read an art therapy blog post last week that said "sometime the reasons why we don't do something provides us with important information."  That statement has stuck with me since then.  I find it very true - instead of beating ourselves up for not doing our "shoulds" and "musts" and "oughts" we should examine all of the other things we did instead.

Anyways, enough rambling on about that.  I wanted to show you my art journal page from the last week since I got home for Christmas.

Also, I wanted to share with you a product that I purchased last Saturday at a last minute handmade art/craft show in Fort Worth.  I bought 3 Book-Inz.  They are magnetic bookmarks that you can have made with almost any picture/symbol.  At first I thought "I read books on a Nook, I don't need bookmarks."  So, the good sales lady that she was mentioned textbooks and I was like "well I read a lot of textbooks for school."  So, I asked if she had a FSU bookmark and she didn't have one made, but said if I wanted to wait a few minutes, she would make it for me.  So, I did and she made it and then I saw 2 other bookmarks that I wanted a well.  So, here they are:

Doctor Who TARDIS Book-Inz

Made for me FSU Book-Inz

US Army Book-Inz
I am a Whovian so I had to get the Doctor Who one, and then I saw the Army one and had to get it too!  I brought a large text book home with me to do some reading before the semester starts, so I have been using the FSU bookmark in that textbook since we got home that day.  I really like it - I keeps your place, looks cute and doesn't mess up your pages (if your the kind of person who does dog-ears on your books).  If you are a book reader, I certainly recommend these!  You can purchase them at the Book-Inz Etsy Shop.  Also, these are great gifts for anyone in school (all those textbooks!) or anyone who is hooked on reading actual books!  My textbook is a hard cover so they work on all types of books.

Well friends that is all for now!  Its 25 degrees outside, so I must head on over to the mall to do my walking.  Thanks for stopping by and have a great day.

Christmas Shopping

**Well this was supposed to post on Thursday but somehow it already posted and I don't know how to get it to go back!  Sorry!  Didn't mean to spam you!  Also this means I probably won't post tomorrow.***

I wanted to tell you guys about all the Christmas shopping I did on Tuesday!  First, I went to a local shopping area called Lincoln Square.  I basically just jumped from store to store checking out whatever I wanted.  I don't get much chance to shop while I am busy with school so I kinda got it all out at once!  Anyways... I went to the following stores..not necessarily in this order:  Pier 1 Imports, Bed Bath and Beyond, Rack Room Shoes, Bath and Body Works, Michael's and Best Buy.  Then it was time for a lunch break.  I can't show you what I got because its presents!

After lunch I did a quick grocery run to Walmart.  Its what I do when I come home to visit - buy groceries and cook!

After lunch I went to get scrubs so that I will have them for my internship that starts in Jan.  Did I tell you guys about that?  I'll be interning at Health South Rehabilitation Hospital.

Then I went to Sam Moon and did more shopping.  I did get some jewerly:

Then I cam back and wrapped presents until mom came home.  We made dinner and watched some Big Bang Theory - Mom's favorite show.  We were all sleepy really early so bedtime was early, but I did finished the book I as reading before going to sleep.

And typing this I realized that I didn't show you the necklace that I got at Thomasville's Victorian Christmas last week.  Here it is:

And an up close of a few of the charms:

Its a very long necklace, but its pretty.  Its got gold and silver and a few different colors so I figured it would go with a lot of different outfits.

Well friends that is all for now.  Thanks for stopping by.  "See" you soon!!

Grades & Some Random Stuff

So, this is out of order, but life got in the way and really I just got 100% confirmation on my final grades today so, whatever.  Anyways... on 12/12/12 we took the final exam for Theories of Art Therapy class...it was rough.  3 hours of essay writing.  I was hoping for a high B but thought I probably would get a low B.  I ended up with a 94!!! At the end of that day I was so happy that the semester was over, and it was 12/12/12 so I decided to do some Art Journaling:

Then we had an end of semster party at my friend Erika's house.  We had a fire:

and we made smores and talked and it was a lot of fun.

Anyways...back to grades... today I found out my final grades for the semester!  All As!!!  Its awesome, but now I'm going to feel pressured to get all As for the rest of the time - I'm a perfectionist like that.

Onto the random stuff...  While running around town trying to get my internship pre-requisets done I found this at Staples:

It holds up your e-reader (in my case a Nook Tablet!):

I am so glad to have one.

Well I already posted once today so I am going to not make this one any longer.  Have a great day everyone!!
